Which two operations made up the proposed Operation Downfall invasion of Japan?
Answer
Olympic and Coronet
Answer
Olympic and Coronet
Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet made up the proposed Operation Downfall invasion of Japan.
Operation Olympic was planned as the first stage, with landings in southern Kyūshū scheduled for November 1945. The objective was to seize territory and airfields that could support a later attack. Operation Coronet would then have invaded the Kantō Plain near Tokyo on Honshū in spring 1946.
The two-stage structure reflected the geography of Japan and the Allied need to build bases before attacking the main population and political center. Kyūshū was the southernmost of Japan’s principal islands, while the Kantō Plain contained Tokyo and a large concentration of infrastructure.
Downfall was canceled after Japan accepted surrender terms in August 1945. It should not be confused with Operation Overlord, which was the 1944 Allied invasion of Normandy. Olympic and Coronet remained planned operations rather than battles that were actually fought.
