Which two bodies of water does the Suez Canal connect?

The story behind the answer

The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

The canal crosses Egypt’s Isthmus of Suez, linking Port Said on the Mediterranean with the Gulf of Suez, an extension of the Red Sea. It opened in 1869 after a decade of construction led by the Suez Canal Company. Unlike the Panama Canal, the Suez Canal has no lock system because the two seas are close to the same sea level.

The route greatly shortened travel between Europe and Asia by avoiding the voyage around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope. Britain and France controlled the canal company for much of its early history, but Egypt nationalized the canal in 1956. The canal has been widened and expanded several times, including the creation of a parallel channel opened in 2015. It remains a major shipping route.
