Which tropical cyclone made landfall in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda in 2013?
Answer
Typhoon Haiyan
Answer
Typhoon Haiyan
Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.
Haiyan was an exceptionally intense tropical cyclone in the western North Pacific. It struck the central Philippines on 8 November 2013, bringing destructive winds, torrential rain, and a powerful storm surge. The city of Tacloban and nearby coastal communities suffered especially severe destruction.
The storm had different names because tropical cyclones receive regional names from the warning agency responsible for each basin. In the Philippines, the national weather service used the name Yolanda, while international meteorological reporting used Haiyan. This is why both names refer to the same storm.
After crossing the Philippines, Haiyan moved into the South China Sea and made another landfall in Vietnam. The disaster killed thousands of people and caused enormous economic losses. Its impacts also showed that storm surge, not wind alone, can be one of the greatest dangers from a landfalling tropical cyclone.
