Which tree species produces the largest trees by wood volume?

The story behind the answer

Sequoiadendron giganteum produces the largest trees by wood volume.

Known as the giant sequoia, this species is native to the western Sierra Nevada of California. Its immense trunks allow individual trees to exceed every other living tree in total volume, even though coast redwoods can grow taller.

The best-known example is General Sherman in Sequoia National Park. General Sherman is not the tallest or widest tree, but its trunk contains more wood than any other known single living tree.

Giant sequoias have thick, fire-resistant bark and can survive low-intensity fires. Their cones may remain closed for years, with heat helping release seeds. They are often confused with coast redwoods, which are Sequoia sempervirens and hold the height record.
