Which tree species is the tallest naturally growing tree in the world?
Answer
Sequoia sempervirens
Answer
Sequoia sempervirens
Sequoia sempervirens is the tallest naturally growing tree species in the world.
Known as the coast redwood, this evergreen conifer grows naturally along a narrow, moist belt of the Pacific coast of northern California and southern Oregon. Individual trees can exceed 100 metres, with the famous tree Hyperion measured at more than 115 metres.
Coast redwoods thrive in a mild climate with winter rain and summer fog. Fog supplies moisture directly to their foliage and reduces water loss during the dry season. Their thick bark contains little resin and helps protect mature trees from many fires.
Sequoia sempervirens is distinct from the giant sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum. Giant sequoias are generally shorter but have greater trunk volume. Coast redwoods can reproduce from seeds and by sprouting from trunks, roots, or fallen trees.
