Which tree is famous for producing rainbow-colored bark as its outer layers peel away?

The story behind the answer

The rainbow eucalyptus is famous for producing rainbow-colored bark as its outer layers peel away.

Its scientific name is Eucalyptus deglupta, and it is native to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. It is unusual among eucalyptus species because it naturally grows in tropical rainforest environments rather than the dry landscapes often associated with eucalyptus.

As sections of its bark shed at different times, the exposed inner bark changes color. Green may give way to blue, purple, orange, and maroon before the surface darkens. The colors are natural stages of bark maturation, not painted stripes.

Rainbow eucalyptus is also a very tall, fast-growing tree and is planted in tropical regions for timber and pulp. Photographs can exaggerate its colors, but the underlying multicolored bark effect is genuine. It should not be confused with ornamental trees whose trunks are artificially painted.
