Which tree is depicted on the national flag of Lebanon?
Answer
Cedar of Lebanon
Answer
Cedar of Lebanon
The cedar of Lebanon is the tree depicted on the national flag of Lebanon.
Cedrus libani is an evergreen conifer native to the mountains of Lebanon, Syria, and southern Turkey. It has broad, spreading branches and dense clusters of needle-like leaves. The tree’s distinctive silhouette and historical importance made it a powerful national symbol, and a stylized green cedar appears at the center of Lebanon’s white flag band.
Cedars were prized in the ancient Near East for durable, aromatic timber. Historical records and biblical texts mention Lebanon’s cedars, while timber from the region was used in construction, including major ancient buildings. Extensive harvesting reduced natural forests, although protected reserves and conservation efforts preserve remaining stands.
The cedar of Lebanon is a true cedar in the genus Cedrus. It should not be confused with trees called “red cedar” or “white cedar,” which belong to unrelated genera. The tree is also Lebanon’s national tree and is featured in the country’s coat of arms.
