Answer
Treaty of Paris (1783)
The Treaty of Paris (1783) officially ended the American Revolutionary War.
Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Britain recognized the United States as free, sovereign, and independent, ending its claim to govern the thirteen former colonies.
The agreement also established boundaries. The United States received territory east of the Mississippi River, north of Spanish Florida, and south of British North America. It also gained fishing rights in waters near Newfoundland and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
The Treaty of Paris is sometimes confused with the broader Peace of Paris, which included separate agreements involving Britain, France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic. The United States treaty is the specific document that recognized American independence. The Confederation Congress ratified it on January 14, 1784, in Annapolis, Maryland.
