The Treaty of Paris of 1783 officially ended the American Revolutionary War and recognized United States independence.

Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Britain recognized the United States as free, sovereign, and independent and accepted boundaries extending west to the Mississippi River, north to the Great Lakes, and south to Spanish Florida.

The American negotiators were Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens, although Laurens signed only the preliminary articles. David Hartley signed for Britain. The treaty also addressed fishing rights, debts, prisoners, and property confiscated during the conflict.

The treaty should not be confused with the earlier Treaty of Paris of 1763, which ended the Seven Years’ War, or the Treaty of Paris of 1898, which ended the Spanish-American War. Congress ratified the 1783 treaty on January 14, 1784, in Annapolis, Maryland.
