Answer
Treaty of Paris (1783)
The Treaty of Paris of 1783 formally ended the American Revolutionary War, whose result America250 celebrates.
Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. It recognized the former Thirteen Colonies as free, sovereign, and independent states. The agreement therefore transformed the political declaration of 1776 into an internationally recognized settlement.
The American victory at Yorktown in 1781 encouraged peace negotiations, but fighting and diplomatic work continued afterward. The treaty also established boundaries for the new United States, extending west to the Mississippi River, north to the Great Lakes, and south to Spanish Florida.
The Treaty of Paris was not the same as the Treaty of Paris of 1763, which ended the French and Indian War. Nor did the 1783 agreement instantly resolve every dispute between Britain and the United States. Nevertheless, it is the definitive peace treaty that ended the war and acknowledged American independence.
