The Treaty of Paris (1783) formally ended the American Revolutionary War for the United States.

Representatives of Great Britain and the United States signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Britain recognized the United States as free, sovereign, and independent, ending the conflict that had begun with fighting in 1775.

The agreement also established generous boundaries for the new nation. The United States gained territory east of the Mississippi River, south of the Great Lakes, and north of Spanish Florida. The treaty addressed fishing rights, debts, prisoners of war, and property belonging to Loyalists.

The treaty was signed in 1783 but ratified by the Congress of the Confederation on January 14, 1784. It is often confused with the Treaty of Versailles, which was part of the post–World War I settlement, and the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812.
