Which treaty formally ended the American Revolutionary War before the America250 anniversary?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Paris (1783) formally ended the American Revolutionary War.

Representatives of the United States and Great Britain signed the treaty in Paris on September 3, 1783. Britain recognized the United States as free, sovereign and independent states, giving legal and diplomatic confirmation to the independence proclaimed in 1776.

The treaty also established boundaries for the new nation, extending west to the Mississippi River and north toward the Great Lakes. It addressed fishing rights, debts, prisoners of war and property belonging to Loyalists.

The agreement is distinct from the Treaty of Paris of 1763, which ended the Seven Years’ War, and the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. Congress ratified the 1783 treaty on January 14, 1784.
