Which treaty ended the Mexican–American War in 1848?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican–American War in 1848.

The treaty was signed on February 2, 1848, at Guadalupe Hidalgo, then a town near Mexico City. Nicholas Trist negotiated for the United States, while Luis G. Cuevas, Bernardo Couto, and Miguel Atristain represented Mexico.

Mexico recognized the Rio Grande as the boundary of Texas and ceded a huge territory to the United States. The cession included present-day California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. The United States agreed to pay Mexico $15 million and assume certain claims by American citizens.

The Senate ratified the treaty on March 10, 1848, and it became effective on May 30. The agreement dramatically expanded United States territory but also intensified disputes over slavery in the newly acquired western lands.
