Answer
Treaty of Paris (1783)
The Treaty of Paris (1783) formally ended the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the United States.
The treaty was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783, after peace negotiations that followed the American victory at Yorktown. The American negotiators were Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, John Jay, and Henry Laurens, although Laurens signed later because he had joined the negotiations after preliminary articles were agreed.
Britain recognized the United States as free, sovereign, and independent. The agreement also established generous western boundaries reaching the Mississippi River and gave the United States fishing rights in waters near Newfoundland and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
The Treaty of Paris is sometimes confused with the broader Peace of Paris, a group of agreements that also settled Britain’s conflicts with France, Spain, and the Dutch Republic. The American treaty itself was ratified by the Confederation Congress on January 14, 1784.
