American Freedom Train
Answer
American Freedom Train
The American Freedom Train carried a traveling museum through all 48 contiguous states during the 1975–76 U.S. Bicentennial. The exhibition train ran from April 1, 1975, to December 31, 1976, displaying artifacts connected with American history and culture.
The train consisted of 26 specially arranged cars. Among the objects shown were historical documents, artworks, and cultural items; a replica of the Liberty Bell and a lunar-rover replica were among the best-known displays. Three steam locomotives, including Southern Pacific 4449, hauled the train on different sections of its route.
More than seven million people visited the train during its tour. It stopped in hundreds of communities, giving people who could not travel to national celebrations a chance to see a large-scale bicentennial exhibition near home. The earlier 1947–49 Freedom Train is a separate project, so the full name “American Freedom Train” identifies the 1975–76 event.
