The Toyota Prius v was the first Prius variant spun off from the Prius platform.

Toyota introduced the Prius v as a roomier, more versatile companion to the standard Prius. It was unveiled in January 2011 and launched in Japan in May of that year, before reaching the United States later in 2011 and Europe in 2012. Its “v” stood for versatility, reflecting its wagon-like body and larger passenger and cargo capacity.

The model was sold under different names around the world. Japan called it the Prius α, while Europe and Singapore used Prius+. In the United States, Prius v identified the extended-body variant, which used the Prius platform and hybrid technology in a compact MPV format.

The Prius c was also a Prius family derivative, but it followed the Prius v as a separately positioned, smaller city car. The Prius Prime, meanwhile, was a plug-in version of the regular Prius rather than the first platform spin-off.
