Which tower was completed in Paris for the 1889 Exposition Universelle?
Answer
Eiffel Tower
Answer
Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris for the 1889 Exposition Universelle.
The tower was built to mark the centennial of the French Revolution and to serve as the entrance arch for the 1889 world’s fair. Engineer Gustave Eiffel’s company designed and constructed the structure, working from plans associated with engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier and architect Stephen Sauvestre.
Construction began in 1887 and finished in 1889. The iron tower originally stood about 300 metres tall, making it the world’s tallest man-made structure at the time. Its height later increased with broadcasting antennas. More than 18,000 individual iron parts were used, connected by millions of rivets.
Some prominent French artists and writers criticized the project before completion, but the tower became an immediate attraction. It was initially intended to stand for only 20 years, yet its value for radio and later television transmission helped preserve it. The Eiffel Tower is now one of France’s best-known landmarks.
