Which Tolkien publication was edited and completed by his son Christopher and released in 1977?
Answer
The Silmarillion
Answer
The Silmarillion
The Silmarillion was edited and completed by J.R.R. Tolkien’s son Christopher and released in 1977.
J.R.R. Tolkien had developed the mythology of The Silmarillion over many decades, but he died in 1973 before preparing a final publishable form. Christopher Tolkien organized, selected, and edited the extensive papers with assistance from fantasy author Guy Gavriel Kay.
The book appeared in 1977, four years after Tolkien’s death. It presents the creation of the world, the divine beings called the Valar, and the histories of the Elves and Men in the First Age.
It is not simply another finished novel by Tolkien. Its editorial history explains differences in structure and tone from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and why Christopher’s role is essential to the published book.
