Which Tolkien character carries the One Ring from the Shire toward Mount Doom?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins carries the One Ring from the Shire toward Mount Doom in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. He inherits the Ring from his cousin Bilbo and accepts the mission of taking it to Mordor.

The Ring cannot simply be used safely or discarded. It must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, where it was originally forged by Sauron. Frodo therefore travels far beyond the Shire, accompanied for much of the journey by Samwise Gamgee.

Frodo is not the only hobbit involved in the quest. Bilbo previously possessed the Ring, and Sam briefly carries it after Frodo is captured. Frodo, however, is the principal Ring-bearer during the central journey.

The quest takes him through Rivendell, Moria, Lothlórien, and Mordor. Its psychological burden is as important as the physical danger, because the Ring gradually exerts greater influence over him.
