Which Tolkien character bears the One Ring for most of The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins bears the One Ring for most of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Bilbo Baggins gives the Ring to Frodo before leaving the Shire, and Gandalf later confirms that it is the dangerous Ring of Power made by Sauron. Frodo accepts the task of carrying it to Rivendell and eventually volunteers to take it toward Mount Doom, where it can be destroyed.

Frodo remains the Ring-bearer through the journey from the Shire, across Eriador, through Moria and Lothlórien, and into Mordor. Samwise Gamgee carries the Ring briefly after Frodo is captured by orcs, but Frodo takes it back. This is why Sam is an important temporary bearer but not the principal one.

The Ring’s influence makes Frodo’s task increasingly difficult. At Mount Doom, he claims the Ring rather than willingly casting it away; its destruction occurs when Gollum bites off Frodo’s finger and falls into the fire.
