Which Titan’s warning did Epimetheus ignore when he accepted Pandora?

The story behind the answer

Epimetheus ignored his brother Prometheus’s warning when he accepted Pandora. Prometheus had advised him not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus welcomed Pandora into his home.

The names help explain the episode’s symbolism. Prometheus means “forethought,” while Epimetheus is commonly understood as “afterthought” or “hindsight.” Their contrasting names fit their roles: Prometheus anticipates danger, whereas Epimetheus recognizes the consequences only afterward.

Pandora is not described in Hesiod as secretly sneaking into Epimetheus’s house to deceive him. Zeus sends her, and Epimetheus accepts her despite the earlier warning. The container is then opened, releasing the troubles that had been kept inside.

Prometheus is also central to the preceding part of the myth cycle because he steals fire for humanity. In many later versions, the warning becomes a memorable lesson about distrust of seemingly attractive gifts, while Epimetheus’s name becomes shorthand for realizing a mistake too late.
