Which Titan was the father of the sun, moon, and dawn?

The story behind the answer

Which Titan was the father of the sun, moon, and dawn? Hyperion.

Hyperion was a Titan who, with his sister Theia, fathered Helios, Selene, and Eos—the divine personifications of the Sun, Moon, and Dawn. This genealogy appears in early Greek myth and explains why Hyperion is associated with the celestial lights, even though his son Helios is the more prominent sun deity in many stories.

Hyperion belonged to the first generation of Titans, children of Gaia, Earth, and Uranus, Sky. His name is commonly interpreted as “the high one.” Unlike Titans such as Cronus or Prometheus, Hyperion has relatively few independent myths. His importance comes mainly from his place in the cosmic family tree and from his connection with heavenly light.

A common mix-up arises because “Hyperion” can function as an epithet of Helios. In Homeric passages, Helios is sometimes called “Helios Hyperion,” while other traditions clearly distinguish Hyperion as Helios’s father. Diodorus Siculus preserves another version in which Hyperion is linked directly with understanding the movements of the Sun and Moon.
