Prometheus was the Titan punished after stealing fire for humanity, an act that led to Zeus’s creation of Pandora.
In Hesiod’s account, Prometheus deceives Zeus during a sacrifice and later steals fire for humans. Zeus responds by arranging a new punishment: the gods create Pandora, whose arrival brings a vessel containing destructive troubles.
The myth connects fire with civilization, skill, and human independence. Later Greek and Roman writers expanded Prometheus into a heroic benefactor who gives humanity knowledge and technology. Aeschylus’s tragedy Prometheus Bound is especially influential, although its authorship and date remain subjects of scholarly discussion.
Prometheus is a Titan, but he is not one of the older generation’s rulers in the same way as Cronus. He often appears as a clever intermediary whose intelligence helps humans while provoking Zeus’s anger.
