Which Titan stole fire for humanity in the myth of Pandora’s box?

The story behind the answer

Prometheus stole fire for humanity in the myth connected with Pandora’s box.

Prometheus was a Titan known for intelligence, planning, and sympathy toward humans. In the best-known version of the myth, he deceives Zeus during a sacrifice and later steals fire from Olympus to give to humanity. Zeus responds by arranging punishment for both Prometheus and humans.

Hesiod’s “Works and Days” connects Pandora directly to this punishment. Zeus orders the gods to create Pandora and sends her to Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother. When Pandora opens the vessel, human life becomes filled with suffering and difficulty. The myth thus makes Pandora part of the consequences of Prometheus’s defiance.

Prometheus’s fire theft became especially influential in later literature, art, and political thought. His name is now associated with technological progress, rebellion, and the risks of challenging authority. The Pandora story and the Prometheus story are related in Hesiod, but they are not identical myths: Prometheus concerns fire and divine punishment, while Pandora concerns the release of human troubles.
