Prometheus is the Titan said to have stolen fire for humanity before Pandora was created. In Greek mythology, he defied Zeus by taking fire from the gods and giving it to mortals.
The gift of fire represents technology, craft, knowledge, and civilization in many interpretations. Zeus responded by arranging a punishment for humanity: Pandora was created and sent into the world with the sealed vessel that released evils.
Prometheus also suffered a separate punishment. Zeus chained him to a mountain, where an eagle repeatedly ate his liver; because Prometheus was immortal, the organ regenerated. Heracles later freed him in versions of the myth.
Prometheus and Pandora therefore belong to the same mythic sequence, but they play contrasting roles. Prometheus helps humans by stealing fire, while Pandora’s opening introduces suffering into human life.
