Prometheus is the Titan blamed for giving fire to humanity before Pandora was created.
In Greek mythology, Prometheus is a champion of humankind and a figure associated with intelligence, craft, and foresight. Hesiod says he deceived Zeus in the division of an ox and later stole fire for mortals, actions that provoke Zeus’s retaliation.
Pandora’s creation is presented as part of that retaliation. Zeus sends her to Prometheus’s brother Epimetheus, who accepts her despite Prometheus’s warning not to receive gifts from Zeus. The connected stories explain both the consequences of fire and the arrival of troubles among humans.
Later authors, especially Aeschylus, developed Prometheus as a more openly sympathetic rebel. Hesiod’s version is older and emphasizes the conflict between Zeus’s authority and Prometheus’s assistance to humanity.
