Which three U.S. coin denominations received temporary Bicentennial reverse designs in 1975 and 1976?

The story behind the answer

The quarter, half dollar, and dollar received temporary Bicentennial reverse designs in 1975 and 1976.

The United States Mint created the circulating commemorative series for the nation’s 200th anniversary. The affected coins were the Washington quarter, Kennedy half dollar, and Eisenhower dollar. Each carried the dual date 1776–1976 on the obverse and a special reverse design.

The quarter reverse showed a colonial drummer, the half dollar depicted Independence Hall, and the dollar featured the Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon. These designs were used on coins struck in both 1975 and 1976, even though every coin carried the date 1776–1976.

The series is sometimes mistaken for a set that included every denomination. Pennies, nickels, and dimes retained their regular designs. The special coins were unusual because they circulated alongside ordinary money rather than being limited solely to collector issues.
