Which three U.S. coin denominations received special 1776–1976 Bicentennial designs?

The story behind the answer

The quarter, half dollar, and dollar received special 1776–1976 Bicentennial designs.

The United States Mint issued the circulating commemorative set in those three denominations. Each coin retained its normal obverse portrait but received a temporary reverse design and the dual date 1776–1976.

The quarter showed a colonial drummer, the half dollar depicted Independence Hall, and the Eisenhower dollar featured the Liberty Bell superimposed on the Moon. These reverses made the coins instantly recognizable as national anniversary issues.

The special coins were struck in 1975 and 1976, but none carries a 1975 date. Collector versions were made in copper-nickel and silver-clad compositions. The set is a useful predecessor to the commemorative coinage authorized for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
