“My Father’s Office” was the The Wonder Years episode ranked No. 29 on TV Guide’s 1997 list of the 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time.
The episode is the third installment of season one and first aired on March 29, 1988. Kevin becomes curious about why his father, Jack Arnold, regularly returns home from NORCOM in a bad mood. Jack brings him to work, where Kevin sees the pressures of his father’s job and learns about the dreams Jack had before settling into factory employment.
The story is notable because it shifts the focus from Kevin’s school and friendships to his relationship with his father. It was also the first stand-alone episode and the first to center on a member of Kevin’s family. Those qualities helped establish the show’s ability to make ordinary family experiences emotionally substantial.
The ranking is sometimes confused with later honors for the pilot. TV Guide’s 1997 list placed “My Father’s Office” at No. 29; a revised 2009 list placed the pilot at No. 43. “The Accident” and “Goodbye” were also memorable episodes, but neither is the 1997 No. 29 selection.
