Taco Cabana began as a single San Antonio restaurant in 1978.
The chain was founded by Felix Stehling, who opened the first Taco Cabana on Hemisfair Boulevard in San Antonio, Texas. Its early identity centered on Mexican-inspired food served in a casual, open-air setting, with colorful décor and patio dining that helped distinguish it from conventional fast-food restaurants.
Taco Cabana became known for items such as tacos, fajitas, beans, rice, and freshly prepared flour tortillas. The company later expanded beyond San Antonio and became one of the recognizable fast-casual Tex-Mex brands in Texas.
Taco Cabana is sometimes confused with other Texas chains because several grew from local restaurants into regional businesses. On the Border, for example, began in Dallas in 1982, while Taco Cabana’s origin is earlier and specifically tied to San Antonio. The 1978 founding date identifies Taco Cabana’s beginning, not the date of a later corporate expansion.
