Which tennis legend is the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center named after?

The story behind the answer

The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is named after Billie Jean King.

The tennis complex stands in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in Queens, New York, and has hosted the US Open since 1978. It was originally called the USTA National Tennis Center before being rededicated in King's honor on August 28, 2006.

King is one of tennis's most influential champions. She won 12 major singles titles, including the 1966, 1967, 1968, 1971, 1972 and 1974 US Championships or US Open titles. She also helped found the Women's Tennis Association in 1973 and fought for equal treatment and prize money.

A common mix-up is confusing the center's name with its stadiums. Arthur Ashe Stadium is named for the 1968 US Open champion, while Louis Armstrong Stadium honors the jazz musician who lived nearby. The overall complex honors King.
