Which Tencent messaging app was first released in 2011?

The story behind the answer

Which Tencent messaging app was first released in 2011? WeChat was first released in 2011.

WeChat began as a Tencent project in Guangzhou in October 2010, created as smartphone use was beginning to challenge the dominance of desktop messaging. Allen Zhang created the original app, while Tencent executive Pony Ma gave it the Chinese name Weixin, meaning “micro-message.” It launched on January 21, 2011.

The service initially grew slowly because its early feature set was limited. Its walkie-talkie-style voice messaging feature, introduced in May 2011, helped make conversations more convenient and accelerated adoption. In 2012, Tencent began using the WeChat name for international markets, while Weixin remained the primary Chinese branding.

WeChat is more than a conventional text messenger today. It combines messaging with voice and video calls, social feeds, payments, games, location sharing, and mini-programs, leading to its description as a Chinese “super-app.” QQ is a common mix-up: it is also Tencent-owned, but it is a separate, older messaging platform.
