Which telescope captured the first image of a black hole released in 2019?
Answer
Event Horizon Telescope
Answer
Event Horizon Telescope
The Event Horizon Telescope captured the first image of a black hole released in 2019.
The Event Horizon Telescope, or EHT, is a planet-scale array of radio observatories that uses very-long-baseline interferometry. By combining observations from widely separated dishes, researchers created the resolving power needed to study the environment around a supermassive black hole.
The first published image showed the bright, ring-like emission around the black hole at the centre of the galaxy Messier 87. The object is known as M87*, and its shadow appears dark against glowing hot gas. The image was released on 10 April 2019.
The EHT did not photograph the black hole's interior, because light cannot escape from within its event horizon. Instead, it imaged the surrounding emission and the black hole's shadow. The result matched predictions from general relativity and became one of the most recognizable astronomical images ever produced.
