Which technology-heavy U.S. index peaked at 5,048.62 before the dot-com crash?

The story behind the answer

The Nasdaq Composite peaked at 5,048.62 on March 10, 2000, before the dot-com crash erased much of its value.

The index includes thousands of companies listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange and is especially associated with technology and internet businesses. During the late 1990s, investors bid up shares of companies whose business models often depended more on future growth than current profits.

After the March 2000 peak, the Nasdaq Composite fell for several years. By October 2002, it had lost roughly 78% from its high. The collapse is commonly called the dot-com bubble burst or the dot-com crash.

The Nasdaq later recovered and eventually exceeded its 2000 peak. Its composition also changed over time, and many companies that survived the crash became major long-term technology businesses.
