New Jersey defeated the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings four games to none, earning the first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history. The Devils’ defensive structure and disciplined neutral-zone play frustrated a Detroit team that had produced one of the NHL’s strongest regular seasons.
The Final was played in May and June 1995 after the NHL season was shortened to 48 games by a lockout. New Jersey won Games 1 and 2 in Detroit, then completed the sweep at home in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Claude Lemieux received the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
