Answer
United States
Answer
United States
The United States won the 1951 Walker Cup at Royal Birkdale. The American team defeated Great Britain and Ireland 6–3 in the match played on 11 and 12 May 1951.
The Walker Cup is a biennial amateur competition between teams representing the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. It is the amateur counterpart most often compared with the professional Ryder Cup, although the Walker Cup predates the Ryder Cup and has its own traditions and format.
At Birkdale, the match began with foursomes before the singles decided the contest. The United States built an advantage in the opening session and completed a 6–3 victory. The result continued America’s strong record in the competition: entering the 1951 match, the United States had lost only once in the previous twelve meetings.
Royal Birkdale also hosted the Curtis Cup in 1948, but that was a women’s amateur team event and is a separate competition.
