Which team won the 1942 Stanley Cup Final after trailing the series 3-0?
Answer
Toronto Maple Leafs
Answer
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs won the 1942 Stanley Cup Final after trailing the series 3–0.
Toronto lost the first three games to the Detroit Red Wings, but won four straight to claim the championship in seven games. This was the first reverse sweep in Stanley Cup Final history and remains the only time an NHL team has overcome a 3–0 Final deficit to win the Cup.
The comeback was especially striking because Detroit had taken both of the opening games in Toronto before winning Game 3 at Detroit’s Olympia Stadium. The Maple Leafs then changed the momentum, winning Games 4 and 5 in Detroit and returning home to finish the series. Toronto won Game 7 by a 3–1 score on April 18, 1942, securing its fourth Stanley Cup.
The teams’ coaches were Toronto’s Hap Day and Detroit’s Jack Adams. Toronto captain Syl Apps accepted the Cup, while rookie Gaye Stewart became the youngest player to win it at the time. The feat is often called a “reverse sweep.”
