Which team won Super Bowl XXIV in January 1990?

The story behind the answer

The San Francisco 49ers won Super Bowl XXIV in January 1990.

The 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55–10 on January 28, 1990, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. The game decided the NFL championship for the 1989 season, so the year of the season and the calendar year of the Super Bowl are easy to confuse.

San Francisco entered the game as the defending champion and quickly turned it into one of the most lopsided title games in professional football. Quarterback Joe Montana threw five touchdown passes and earned Super Bowl MVP honors for the third and final time in his career.

Jerry Rice caught three of Montana's touchdown passes, while the 49ers' defense held Denver's offense in check. The 45-point margin remained the largest in Super Bowl history, and San Francisco's 55 points set a then-record for a winning team. The victory gave the franchise its second consecutive Super Bowl title and fourth championship of the decade.
