The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated Calgary four games to three in the 2004 championship series. Tampa Bay won the deciding Game 7 by a 2–1 score on June 7, 2004, earning the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Calgary was the Western Conference champion and had home games in the series.

The Final was tightly contested. Calgary led the series 3–2 after winning Game 5 in overtime, but Tampa Bay forced a deciding game and held on in the finale. Ruslan Fedotenko scored both Lightning goals in Game 7, while Craig Conroy scored Calgary’s only goal.

The Flames had previously won the Cup in 1989 and were making their third Final appearance. The 2004 championship was also the last NHL postseason before the 2004–05 lockout, which canceled the following season. Brad Richards won the Conn Smythe Trophy.
