Which team has the most Stanley Cup Final appearances without ever winning?

The story behind the answer

The Vancouver Canucks have made the most Stanley Cup Final appearances among teams that have never won the championship. Vancouver reached the Final in 1982, 1994, and 2011, but lost each series.

The 1982 Canucks were swept by the New York Islanders, while the 1994 team pushed the New York Rangers to seven games before losing the deciding contest at Madison Square Garden. In 2011, Vancouver won the Presidents' Trophy and took a 3–2 series lead over the Boston Bruins, but Boston captured the final two games.

A common mix-up is the Buffalo Sabres, who have also lost both of their Final appearances, in 1975 and 1999. The Philadelphia Flyers have appeared in the Final far more often, but they won the Cup in 1974 and 1975, so they do not qualify. Vancouver's three unsuccessful Final trips therefore remain the relevant record.
