Which team did Australia beat in the 1991 Rugby World Cup final?

The story behind the answer

Australia beat England in the 1991 Rugby World Cup final. The Wallabies won 12–6 at Twickenham Stadium in London on 2 November 1991.

Australia’s only try came from prop Tony Daly after a line-out and forward drive, with Michael Lynagh converting. Lynagh also kicked two penalties, giving Australia a 9–0 half-time lead. England scored two penalties by Jonathan Webb, but Australia’s defence held firm through a tense second half.

The final was notable because England had entered as hosts and had reached the championship match with a powerful, forward-oriented style. They attempted a more expansive approach in the final, but struggled to break down Australia’s organised defence. The Wallabies had already eliminated defending champions New Zealand in the semi-final.

This result gave Australia its first Rugby World Cup title. It is sometimes confused with the 1987 final, won by New Zealand, or the 1995 final, when South Africa defeated New Zealand in extra time.
