Which team beat the Los Angeles Lakers 4 to 0 to win the 1988-89 NBA Championship?

The story behind the answer

The Detroit Pistons beat the Los Angeles Lakers 4–0 to win the 1988–89 NBA Championship. The sweep gave Detroit its first NBA title and ended a difficult Finals rematch for the Lakers, who had defeated the Pistons in seven games the previous season.

Detroit’s “Bad Boys” team was built around physical defense, disciplined team play, and stars such as Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Bill Laimbeer, and Dennis Rodman. The Pistons had already established themselves as an Eastern Conference power, but the 1989 Finals proved they could dominate the league’s defending champions.

The series was shortened by injuries to key Lakers players, including Magic Johnson and Byron Scott. Even so, Detroit’s victory was decisive: the Pistons won all four games and Joe Dumars was named Finals MVP. A common mix-up is confusing this championship with the 1988 Finals, when the Lakers defeated Detroit 4–3. The 1989 sweep was Detroit’s first championship, while its second came in 1990.
