Which Taoist tradition is associated with the medieval Shangqing revelations?

The story behind the answer

The medieval revelations known as Shangqing were associated with Shangqing Taoism, also called the Highest Clarity school.

Shangqing developed in southern China during the fourth century. According to tradition, the aristocrat Yang Xi received revelations from celestial beings, and members of the Xu family helped preserve and transmit the texts. These revelations emphasized meditation, visualization, celestial journeys, and the cultivation of a refined inner spiritual life.

The school formed part of the aristocratic and literate religious culture of medieval China. Its scriptures described divine realms, perfected beings, and methods for harmonizing the practitioner with cosmic forces. Shangqing practices differed from the communal and ritual organization associated with the Celestial Masters, although Taoist schools influenced one another.

Shangqing is also important in the history of Taoist scripture. Its revelations helped expand the Taoist canon and contributed ideas that later traditions, including internal alchemy, could reinterpret.
