TSMC manufactures many of the world’s most advanced computer chips for companies such as Apple and Nvidia.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly abbreviated TSMC, pioneered the dedicated semiconductor foundry model. Instead of designing chips under its own consumer brand, TSMC manufactures chips designed by other companies, allowing customers to outsource fabrication while focusing on architecture and products.
Founded in 1987 by Morris Chang, TSMC became a crucial part of the global technology supply chain. Its customers have included Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and many other chip designers. TSMC operates advanced fabrication plants in Taiwan and has also announced or built facilities in places including the United States and Japan.
TSMC’s market capitalization reflects the strategic importance of semiconductor manufacturing as well as its earnings. It is sometimes confused with Nvidia: Nvidia primarily designs processors and software, while TSMC manufactures chips for customers under contract.
