Gou established the company as Hon Hai Precision Industry in Taiwan, initially making plastic components for television sets. It later adopted Foxconn as its international brand and became one of the world’s largest electronics contract manufacturers.

A crucial early turning point came in 1980, when Gou won an order from Atari to manufacture joystick components.
