Taipei 101 traditionally hosts a New Year’s Eve fireworks display on its exterior.
Taipei 101 is a supertall skyscraper in Taipei, Taiwan, and its annual fireworks show has become one of the city’s signature New Year celebrations. Pyrotechnics are fired from multiple levels of the building, creating a display that outlines the tower’s stepped form.
The skyscraper opened in stages around the turn of the millennium and was officially opened in 2004. At 508 meters, it was the world’s tallest building when completed, a status it held until the Burj Khalifa surpassed it in 2010.
Taipei 101’s New Year display is sometimes described as a “fireworks building” event, but the fireworks are not simply projected images. They are real pyrotechnic effects mounted and coordinated on the tower, alongside citywide celebrations and performances.
