The SZA album that debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in December 2022 is SOS.
Released on December 9, 2022, SOS is SZA's second studio album and the long-awaited follow-up to Ctrl, her 2017 debut. Its title reflects themes of heartbreak, self-protection, resentment, and emotional uncertainty, while the music moves among R&B, hip-hop, pop, and alternative production.
The album opened at number one on the Billboard 200 with 318,000 equivalent album units, giving SZA her first chart-topping album. Its run was strengthened by songs including "Good Days," "I Hate U," "Nobody Gets Me," "Kill Bill," and "Snooze."
Ctrl is the tempting mix-up because it was SZA's breakthrough album, but it predates SOS by five years. Lana is associated with a later deluxe project, while Z was an earlier 2014 EP, not the December 2022 number-one album.
