Which Swiss player partnered with Roger Federer to win the 2014 Davis Cup?
Answer
Stan Wawrinka
Answer
Stan Wawrinka
Stan Wawrinka partnered with Roger Federer to help Switzerland win the 2014 Davis Cup.
The final was played in Lille, France, from 21 to 23 November 2014. Switzerland defeated the host nation 3–1, winning the Davis Cup for the first time in its history. Wawrinka supplied the opening point by defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first singles rubber.
Federer and Wawrinka then formed Switzerland’s doubles team. They beat Richard Gasquet and Julien Benneteau, giving Switzerland a 2–1 lead. Federer clinched the tie the next day by defeating Gasquet, completing the breakthrough victory for Swiss men’s tennis.
The partnership is sometimes remembered mainly through Federer’s deciding win, but Wawrinka was essential to the result. His opening singles victory and doubles appearance put Switzerland in position to claim the trophy. Marc Rosset, another prominent Swiss player, belonged to an earlier generation and was not Federer’s 2014 final partner.
