The Swedish power metal band that released “Carolus Rex” is Sabaton.
Released on May 25, 2012, “Carolus Rex” is Sabaton’s sixth studio album. Its title refers to the Latin phrase meaning “Charles the King,” and the album is a concept work about the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire, particularly the reign of King Charles XII. The subject fits Sabaton’s broader focus on military history and historical storytelling.
The album was recorded in both English- and Swedish-language versions, giving listeners two distinct presentations of the same material. Peter Tägtgren produced the record at Abyss Studios, and the album includes songs such as “The Lion from the North,” “A Lifetime of War,” and “The Carolean’s Prayer.”
“Carolus Rex” became one of Sabaton’s most successful releases. It earned gold certification in Poland and platinum certification in Sweden, later reaching quadruple-platinum status in Sweden. Powerwolf, DragonForce, and HammerFall are also European power metal acts, but none of them released this album.
