Which surfer became the first woman to win eight world titles?
Answer
Stephanie Gilmore
Answer
Stephanie Gilmore
Stephanie Gilmore became the first woman to win eight World Surf League world titles.
The Australian surfer secured her eighth women’s world championship in 2022. Her title record followed championships in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2022. She won her first title as a rookie in 2007.
Gilmore’s early career was especially remarkable because she captured the world title in each of her first three seasons on the elite tour. Her smooth, powerful style and success in both small and powerful surf made her one of the most influential surfers of her generation.
Layne Beachley previously held the women’s record with seven world titles. Carissa Moore won five. Gilmore’s eight titles are a women’s record, while the men’s record is held by Kelly Slater with 11.
